How to rank in the Google Map Pack (the local 3-pack that actually gets the calls)

Type "hair salon near me" into Google and look at what comes first. Above the regular blue links, there's a little map with three businesses pinned under it. That box is called the Map Pack (or the local 3-pack), and it is the single most valuable piece of real estate in local search.
Why? Because most people who search "near me" never scroll past it. They tap one of those three, see the reviews and the call button, and book. Landing in those three spots can do more for your chair than a year of Instagram. Miss it, and you're invisible to the people who were ready to call.
The good news: how you get in there is not a mystery. Google has been pretty open about what it weighs. Let me break it down so you know exactly what to work on.
the three things Google weighs (and what you can actually move)
Google ranks the Map Pack on three factors. Knowing them tells you where to spend your effort.
- Relevance. How well your business matches what they searched. Are you actually a "bridal makeup artist," and does your profile say so clearly?
- Distance. How close you are to the searcher. You can't move your studio, so this one is mostly fixed, but it's also why being strong on the other two matters so much.
- Prominence. How well-known and trusted you are. This is reviews, your web presence, consistency, activity. This is the one you have the most power over.
You can't change distance. So the whole game is winning on relevance and prominence. Everything below is how.
step 1: your Google Business Profile is the foundation (fill all of it)
You cannot appear in the Map Pack without a Google Business Profile, and you can't rank well with a half-empty one. This is the listing behind the pin. Most beauty pros claim it, fill in three fields, and wonder why they're not showing up.
Fill in every single field, because each one feeds relevance:
- Exact business name (your real name, no keyword stuffing, which can get you suspended)
- The right primary category ("Hair Salon," "Makeup Artist," "Nail Salon"), plus relevant secondary categories. This is one of the strongest relevance signals there is. Pick precisely.
- Services, each one listed with a short description in the words people search
- Service area if you travel to clients
- Hours, kept accurate (including holidays)
- Photos of your real work, your space, and you, added regularly
- Your website link pointing to a real site (not a Fresha link)
A fully completed profile is the price of entry. The complete walkthrough lives in local SEO for beauty pros; this guide is the Map-Pack-specific layer on top.
step 2: reviews are your biggest prominence lever (so run them on purpose)
If distance is fixed and relevance is mostly setup, reviews are the dial you turn to climb. Google leans heavily on review quantity, quality, recency, and your responses when it decides prominence. A profile with eighty recent, glowing, replied-to reviews outranks an equally close competitor with nine old ones, almost every time.
So make reviews a system, not an afterthought:
- Ask every happy client, at the right moment (right after the reveal), with a one-tap link. The method is in how to ask clients for reviews and actually get them.
- Keep them fresh. A steady trickle beats a one-time pile. Google rewards recency, so an active stream signals you're alive and busy.
- Reply to them, the good and the bad. Replies are a ranking and trust signal both. Stay gracious even on the rough ones (how to respond to a bad review).
- Nudge for keywords, gently. When a client mentions in their review what you did ("she did my wedding hair and it lasted all night"), that text helps you match those searches. You can't script reviews, but you can ask "if you have a sec, mentioning what we did helps so much."
Reviews are the closest thing to a Map Pack cheat code, and most of your competition is lazy about them. The why-it-works is in turn reviews into a Google ranking.
step 3: be consistent everywhere (NAP)
Google cross-checks your business details across the web to decide if you're legit and which info to trust. The shorthand is NAP: Name, Address, Phone. If your name, address, and phone number are written differently on your website, your Instagram, your Facebook, your Yelp, and your Google profile, Google gets confused, and confusion costs you ranking.
So make them identical everywhere. Same business name, same address format, same phone number, on every profile you have. It's tedious and it's boring and it genuinely matters. One afternoon of cleaning up mismatched listings can lift you.
step 4: a real website that backs it up
Your Map Pack ranking and your website feed each other. A real, relevant website strengthens the prominence Google assigns your profile, and your profile drives clicks to your site. A thin booking-link page can't do this job; Google treats it as not really yours.
Your site should clearly say what you do and where, ideally with pages for your main services and your area, so it reinforces the same relevance signals as your profile. (That on-page side is its own guide: on-page local SEO.)
step 5: stay active
Google favors businesses that look alive. A profile that hasn't been touched in a year looks dormant; one with fresh photos, new reviews, the occasional Google post, and current info looks like a thriving business worth recommending. You don't need to do a lot. You need to not go silent. A few new work photos a month and a steady review trickle keep the signal warm.
the honest part
Here's the catch, same as always. Fully optimizing your profile, running reviews as a constant system, keeping NAP identical across every platform, maintaining a real relevant website, and never going dormant, that's an ongoing local-SEO job, and it's nobody's favorite way to spend an evening. It's also exactly the kind of steady, unglamorous work that decides whether the ready-to-book "near me" searcher calls you or the salon down the street.
That's the work PrettyPilot runs for you. We keep your Google profile fully optimized and active, send review requests automatically after appointments and tee up your approval on replies, keep your business info consistent everywhere, and run the real website that backs it all up, so you climb toward those three spots without spending your nights on it.
