5 Google Business Profile mistakes quietly keeping you off the map

Your Google Business Profile is the single most valuable free tool you have for getting found, and almost every beauty pro I look at is fumbling it in roughly the same five ways. The frustrating part is these aren't hard problems. They're small misses that quietly keep you off the map while the salon down the street gets the call.
Here are the five, with the fix for each. Open your profile on your phone right now and check yourself against this list. Most people find at least two.
mistake 1: you "claimed it" and then left it half-empty
The most common one by far. You claimed your profile years ago, filled in your name and hours, and never touched it again. Google sees a skeleton and ranks you like a skeleton.
Google rewards complete profiles, because complete means it can trust what you do and confidently show you. Every empty field is a relevance signal you're throwing away.
The fix: fill in everything. Services with descriptions, your service area if you travel, your website link, your hours including holidays, the "from the business" attributes, all of it. Treat every blank field as money you're leaving on the table. A full profile beats a half-empty one that's literally closer to the searcher.
mistake 2: the wrong primary category (or a vague one)
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Pick it wrong or pick it lazy, and you're invisible for the searches that matter.
I see beauty pros set themselves as "Beauty Salon" when they're specifically a "Hair Salon," or "Hair Salon" when they're really a "Makeup Artist." Vague or off categories mean you match fewer of the right searches.
The fix: set your primary category as precisely as it fits what you mostly do ("Makeup Artist," "Hair Salon," "Nail Salon," "Eyelash Service"). Then add secondary categories for your other services. Be specific, not broad. Specific gets found.
mistake 3: no photos, or stale ones
A profile with no photos, or three blurry ones from 2019, looks dead and gives a searcher nothing to fall for. Photos are often the first thing someone judges you on in the Map results, and Google notices that profiles with fresh photos get more engagement, which feeds your ranking.
The fix: add real photos of your actual work, your space, and you, and keep adding them. A handful a month keeps your profile looking alive and busy. One honest rule, the same everywhere: show real work. Brighten and crop, never fabricate a result. The whole point of the photo is that it matches what she'll get in your chair.
mistake 4: ignoring reviews (asking, and replying)
Reviews are one of the biggest levers for showing up in local search, and most beauty pros are passive about them: they don't ask, and they don't reply. That's leaving your single best ranking-and-trust signal on the floor.
A profile with a steady stream of recent, replied-to reviews outranks a closer competitor with a handful of old ones. And reviews you reply to signal to both Google and humans that you're an active, real, caring business.
The fix: ask every happy client at the right moment with a one-tap link (here's the no-pressure method), keep them fresh, and reply to all of them, the glowing and the rough. Stay gracious even on a bad one (how to do that without making it worse). The deeper why is in turn reviews into a Google ranking.
mistake 5: inconsistent info, and a dead profile
Two quieter killers, related enough to bundle.
First, inconsistent business info. If your name, address, and phone number are written differently across your website, Instagram, Facebook, and Google, you confuse Google about who and where you are, and confusion costs you ranking. Make them identical everywhere, down to the formatting.
Second, a dormant profile. Google favors businesses that look alive. If yours hasn't been touched in a year, no new photos, no recent reviews, no posts, it reads as neglected, and neglected gets outranked by active.
The fix: make your name, address, and phone identical on every platform you're on, and keep the profile warm with a few fresh photos a month, an occasional Google post, and a steady review trickle. You don't need to do a lot. You need to not go silent.
the honest part
None of these five is hard. The problem is that fixing them and then keeping them fixed, fresh photos, a constant review stream, replies, consistent info everywhere, an active profile, is ongoing work, and it's the first thing to fall off the list when you've got a full chair and a full inbox. So profiles drift back to half-empty and stale, and the bookings quietly go elsewhere.
